With this little tweak, you can customize the shortcuts displayed in the placebar on the left hand side of Window's open/save dialog window (to change the shortcuts displayed in Office's open/save dialog windoow, refer toMicrosoft Knowledge Base Article - 826214). This tweak does involve theRegistry Editor so why don't you open it now and navigate to:
If thecomdlg32 key does not exist, you need to create it. Now create a subkey under the comdlg32 key namedPlacesBar. At this point you should be inCURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\PlacesBar.
Next create a newDWORD entry for every shortcut you want in the placesbar. Name themPlace0-Place4 (maximum of 5 shortcuts) and double-click them to set their decimal values by clickingDecimal under theBase frame of theEdit DWORD Value window. When using DWORD values, you can only add Windows defined folders to the placesbar. Here are some of the predefined decimal values:
You may also define your own custom directory paths by adding a string value--remember to follow the same naming convention. Once you have created the string value with the appropriate name, you must change its value to the path of the desired directory. For instance, if you want the first shortcut in the placesbar to link to "C:\My Stuff" then you would create astring value namedPlace0 with the value ofC:\My Stuff.
The registry keys above would customize the open/save dialog box in this manner:
Registry Shy?!
If you're scared of modifying your registry but still want to customize the default shortcuts in the placesbar then take advantage of the code generator below. Simply select the shortcuts you want in the comboboxes below and watch the code in the textarea change. Once you are satisfied with you're custom shortcut configuration then click the link above the textarea to copy the code to your clipboard.
Once you have copied the code into your clipboard, open up a simple text editor, such as NotePad or WordPad and paste the code there. ClickFile Save As... and save the file under anyname just as long as you include the extension.reg at the end. Finally, locate theregistry file you've just saved and double-click it. Once the registry has been updated successfully, save or open something to see the new changes.
