I think what the best of all for you will be to choose one of the language learning courses and sign up for it.

light blue, dark / deep blue and navy are common conversational variations of "blue"
blue and indigo are traditional colours of a rainbow spectrum
wiki
The modern English word blue comes from Middle English bleu or blewe, from the Old French bleu, a word of Germanic origin, related to the Old High German word blao.[4]
In Russian and some other languages, there is no single word for blue, but rather different words for light blue (голубой, goluboy) and dark blue (синий, siniy).
Several languages, including Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Lakota Sioux, use the same word to describe blue and green. For example, in Vietnamese the colour of both tree leaves and the sky is xanh. In Japanese, the word for blue (青 ao) is often used for colours that English speakers would refer to as green, such as the colour of a traffic signal meaning "go". (For more on this subject, see Distinguishing blue from green in language)

That's not so rare, in Japanese there is no native definition for green color at all, for example. Their grass and trees are blue actually. )

What do you suppose is there unuseful?
If you really want to improve your language skills - the best way is to be in multilingual community - in this situation - it's English environment.
Of, course, you can choose free language clubs, which always are organized by couch surfers or participants of hospitality clubs in your city.
Good luck, guys!

This is tough to explain, but, if you want to say:
"spent a lot of time..." then "deciphering"
But, if you want to say "to decipher", then your sentence should start something like:
"took a lot of time...."
